We are all immigrants and the U.S. Benefits greatly from immigration, but we continue to have on-going issues.
Immigration needs vary by state based on the economy and job situation. If unemployment is low, immigration needs increase but if unemployment is high or anticipated to be high, the quotas are reduced. If an immigrant wants to enter the US, they request a VISA which may be rejected due to quota restrictions. If certain states have a shortage of workers in a particular industry, they may look the other way when it comes to VISA’s or over-stays, so I think the federal government and the states should work together to ensure an adequate number of VISA’s and the appropriate level of enforcement.
Both parties normally work together to ensure an adequate workforce, but this issue has been politicized in recent times. We are also a compassionate country that accepts refuges for humanitarian reasons and this goodwill also benefits the US. At the same time, we do need to protect our borders against criminals and drug traffickers so we still need federal enforcement to look for gangs or cartels that require federal assistance, but in most cases, ICE and the local police are able to enforce these laws.
Immigrants should be thoroughly vetted, but there should be some path to citizenship to resolve the current issue when it benefits the US, especially immigrants that have been in the US for an extended period of time in a productive manner.
A Border wall is not an effective solution since there are more effective means of controlling illegal immigration with modern technology. The existing fence can be extended and electronics added for a fraction of the $20B estimated for a wall.
Most people are against terrorism and want to live in peace and most of the domestic terrorism has been by people that have lived in the US for a long period of time, so banning Muslim immigration would be ineffective.
We do not support inhumane treatment of immigrants and deportations should be conducted in a civil manner.
